International Women’s Day
International women’s day wasn’t always celebrated on the 8th March, the original date was the 19th March which was way back in 1911. The reason for it being on the 19th was because the Prussian king promised to introduce votes for women on that day, which was in 1848. I mean, this is a huge reason to celebrate women, am I right?!
Sadly, it’s a fact that women earn 23% less than men globally, which is why the theme for this year's campaign is #EachforEqual. Fighting for equal rights by celebrating women’s achievements, increasing visibility and calling out for a gender-equal world, which we all want! Neither the less, here at select we’re always celebrating women and we think expressing happiness through clothing has a massive impact on everybody. Let’s have fun with fashion and empower women along the way!
Yes, you already know it. Kylie Jenner is ranked number 1 on the most influential women’s list in fashion on Harper’s Bazaar, and she sure deserves it! She has driven more than two million searches this year alone.
Do you remember that pink mini dress she wore for her birthday? Well, that dress caused searches for ‘pink dresses’ increase 107% in 48 hours! I mean, that is crazy – she’s a style icon and many people look up to her, and for good reasoning. Kylie is the youngest ever, self-made billionaire reaching a ’ten-figure fortune’ at 21 – which is younger than Mark Zuckerberg who was 23 when he reached that milestone.
From her cosmetic company success to becoming a style icon, to charitable donations – Kylie Jenner deserves to be at the top of this list. So here are some of our favourite Kylie inspired looks...

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, not only is she ranked 3rd on the International Women's list but she’s a real-life princess! She has made it in life, I mean what young girl didn’t aspire to be a princess?! Not only is she royalty because she married Prince Harry, but the charitable work she has done makes her such an inspirational and powerful woman – much more than just being a royal.
Meghan has become an advocate for women’s rights after visiting Africa on the royal tour which she used as an opportunity to highlight gender-based violence. As well as her charitable work, Meghan is also a style icon. Lyst reports that if she wears a designer garment, that brand will see a 200% increase in search demands over the next few days. Which I’m not surprised at, Meghan’s style is innovative, classy and inspiring to many women. Here are some of our favourite looks from Meghan which have inspired our Select style.

The queen of music, fashion, beauty, and everything else, right? Rihanna is a role model and has been for years. Her music career has brought so much success, with the album ‘ANTI’ released in 2016 having the most no.1 songs on the Billboards Dance Club Songs chart!
Rihanna is inspiring to us all, she is a strong-minded businesswoman who wants the world to be a better place - she has taken part in many campaigns such as the MAC Viva Glam campaign which benefits men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS. Not only this but in 2006 Rihanna created her believe foundation which was to help terminally ill children. Fast forward a few years and she has an incredibly successful cosmetic company ‘Fenty Beauty’ which is very diverse.
As an influential woman, style is a big part of what inspires people and when Rihanna wore that fuchsia dress for her birthday by Saint Laurent – it sold out worldwide. We have put together some Rihanna inspired outfits that we love, and we think you will too!
Hey upper east siders... the gossip girl queen herself, Blake Lively. I feel like most girls have watched Gossip Girl, so am I right in thinking we all loved Sarena van der Woodsen? Her outfits alone had me hooked! Which takes me onto her style... when she wore the Ralph Lauren two-piece, 4,000 searches were then made for ‘Ralph Lauren suits’ in the next week, I mean she did look amazing in it!
Aside from acting and fashion, Blake has always been very involved with charitable events. She has worked with the Child Rescue Coalition on promoting a ‘groundbreaking’ technology which highlights IP addresses of people who download and share images of minors, which she was then chosen as an honoree for. As well as this, her and Ryan Reynolds – her husband – donated $2 million for Immigrant Children’s Rights, it really is good to see people using their platforms to bring awareness to different matters. Here are the Selects team favourite Blake inspired outfits, enjoy Xoxo...
Last but certainly not least, Kim Kardashian. Arguably the most spoke about name, ever, some good and some bad, but what we can’t deny is that Kim is a role model, style icon and an inspirational woman. Her fashion sense is known all around the world, brands are designing pieces inspired by Kim’s wardrobe – a lot of people love her looks. She helped revive the Fendi logo when she posted an image dressed head to toe in the brand, this significantly raised searches by 16% each month.
Kim has recently found a new calling – criminal justice, taking after her father. She studies 18 hours of law per week which is getting her ready to take the bar exam and eventually become a lawyer, maybe as early as 2022.
Many people can relate to Kim with the struggles she’s faced, one of them being her fertility complications, the awareness she has brought on this subject is amazing which promotes and normalizes the use of surrogates. We could list all the amazing things Kim has done, but instead, we want you to see our favourite Kim inspired looks from Select.
